Where Accessibility Meets Luxury: My Stay at Captains Cove, Paynesville
Where Accessibility Meets Luxury: Captains Cove, Paynesville
Now and then, you discover a place that feels like it was designed with you in mind.Captains Cove in Paynesville, Victoria is one of those places — a rare blend of waterfront luxury, peaceful surroundings and stylish accessibility. Nestled along the canals of the Gippsland Lakes, it offers not only comfort, but abundant wildlife and scenery at every turn.
From the moment I arrived with my family, it was clear that the managers of Captains Cove (Gippsland Holidays) understand accessibility. The apartment I stayed in was modern, spacious and beautifully furnished. Proof that accessible accommodation can be both functional and stylish, without compromise.
The dedicated car park was just meters from the apartment and completely flat, making it easy to enter the property with all our luggage.
As we entered the apartment, the first thing I noticed was the generous space — not just in the living areas, but throughout.
As a wheelchair user, I found there was plenty of room to move, turn and navigate without having to dodge furnishings or walls. The hallways are extra wide, and even though the bedroom is carpeted, it was still easy to roll a wheelchair, with plenty of turning space around the bed.
There is also sufficient space under the bed for hoist users. The rest of the apartment features smooth, easy-glide flooring.
The bathroom was practical, accessible and thoughtfully designed. The roll-in shower offered ample space and included a drop-down shower chair, with grab bars positioned exactly where they were needed for safe, easy transfers. The glide-under vanity made everyday tasks like brushing my teeth and washing my hands comfortable and straightforward.
The kitchen was fully equipped, which is another bonus for more extended stays. Everything, including the crockery and cutlery, was within reach, as well as the microwave and stovetops.
The lightweight furniture was also a big tick. It made sliding the coffee table or moving dining chairs simple if needed. And for anyone staying for an extended period, the European laundry is an absolute bonus.
But what really makes Captains Cove special goes beyond its accessibility features — it’s the sense of place. The calm water outside. The gentle hum of boats gliding past. The feeling that the world has slowed down just enough for you to catch up to it. While it’s close to town, it feels blissfully tucked away.
Families will be happy to know there’s also a tennis court, basketball court and an indoor heated pool. While the pool isn’t accessible, it’s a fantastic place to keep kids entertained, especially on cooler days. For those who prefer quieter moments, you can sit back on the patio and enjoy the peaceful stillness with a glass of your favourite drink, or have a BBQ.

Outside your doorstep, Paynesville offers plenty to explore, including the ferry to Raymond Island, famous for its koala population. Café lovers will find no shortage of good coffee and nature fans can soak up walking trails and birdlife. A smooth concrete footpath takes you over the canals and across the bridge, making it an easy 600-metre roll or walk into the heart of Paynesville.
