Making Accessible Travel Easier for Carers: Tips for a Stress-Free Break - Part 2

Planning a holiday for someone with accessibility needs can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re caring for a family member or client, a little planning can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. In the first part of our carer-focused travel tips series, we provided recommendations for booking your stay. Now, in part two, we cover activities, resources for flying, road or air travel and more.

Plan for Accessible Travel: Special Assistance

When it comes to transport, many Australian airlines, public transport systems, and even ferries offer special assistance for passengers with accessibility needs. If you're flying, it’s crucial to notify your airline in advance to arrange wheelchair assistance, priority boarding, or other specific requirements.

Other great resources:

Companion Card

Consider getting a Companion Card, which allows carers to attend events and public transport without paying for a second ticket. Make sure to check with venues and transport services whether they accept the Companion Card.

Pro Tip: When booking a Maxi Taxi, have the hotel handle the booking for you. Taxi drivers often decline short fares for accessible vans, but they’re more likely to accept bookings made by hotels.

Finding Accessible Activities

Once your accommodation is sorted, look for local activities that cater to your loved one’s needs. Many tourist attractions, parks, and museums are now more accessible, with wheelchair ramps, sensory-friendly events, and adapted trails. Before booking, call ahead to confirm the details.

Google Maps has a great accessibility feature that can help you find wheelchair-friendly locations. Simply turn on “Accessible Places” in the settings to view accessible entrances, seating, and restrooms.

Pro Tip:  Local councils and accessible travel websites often list activities and experiences designed for people with special needs. Use these resources when planning your itinerary.

Pack Smart: Essentials and Medications

As with any trip, packing is key. Ensure you’ve packed all necessary medications, mobility aids, and comfort items your loved one may need. Consider using Webster Packs for medications to save space and time. If mobility equipment is needed, check whether your accommodation offers it or use the Accessible Accommodation website’s filters to find places with equipment on hand.
Pro Tip: If you’re hiring mobility equipment, arrange for delivery before check-in and collection after check-out. Most don’t deliver on weekends, so if you are arriving on a weekend, you may need to book an extra day or adjust your scheduled stay. Notify your accommodation in advance so they can store it if needed.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must, especially if you’re travelling overseas or have a family member with medical conditions. Look for policies that cover medical emergencies, cancellations, and any travel disruptions related to your loved one’s health. We’ve used Covermore Insurance, which is more affordable and supportive of those with disabilities.

Pro Tip:  Always declare pre-existing medical conditions when purchasing travel insurance. Failing to do so could void your coverage.

Stay Flexible and Adaptable

Travel doesn’t always go according to plan, and that’s okay. Stay flexible and ready to adapt to changes. Sometimes, unplanned detours can lead to the most memorable parts of the journey.
