Palms on Fourth Accessible Accommodation is exclusively managed by Accessible Accommodation.
I work for Accessible Accommodation as a Bookings Administrator and live on the Gold Coast. On our three-tiered rating system, I am classified as Assisted Walking, however, I use a scooter on occasion. I have assessed it based on an Assisted Walking and Independent Wheelchair Category. I have also taken into consideration the important requirements a person with a disability needs whenever I manage a booking.
I arrived at Palms on Fourth and instantly noticed what a beautifully presented property it is. There is a pin pad on the left of the gate within easy reach and easy to read from my scooter. There is parking around the back or on-street parking, both options provided ample space to get my scooter out of the rear of my car.
At the gate to enter the house there is a key lock box. This was also at an accessible height and contains the keys and gate remote you will need for your stay.
Once through the gate, you are in a fully fenced secure front yard with a grass area that is perfect for a service/small dog. (The property is pet friendly on approval). An even concrete path leads to the ramp that takes you around the side of the house to the accessible entry through the laundry. The ramp has rails on the right-hand side.
It was a bit of a tight turn to get through the accessible entry but it was no different to many other entry’s I have experienced. Therefore, it may not suit very large wide wheelchairs. (Door widths are 86 cm).
Once inside you can see the little things that will make your stay perfect- a Nespresso coffee machine, dishwasher, a stack of board games, and an extendable dining table that can comfortably seat 6 all the time.
The living area has ample seating and is easily accessed on my scooter. The kitchen was a galley style and for me, I needed to reverse back out but that was easily done. (The owner has kindly repositioned the carpets to allow smooth wheelchair clearance).
There are 3 bedrooms with 2 having access to their own bathroom, the main bedroom has an accessible ensuite and walk-in robe. The bed was a comfortable height and easy to get in and out and plenty of room to turn my scooter around. The light switches are within easy reach as are the sink, taps and toilet in the ensuite.
The ensuite has an open plan step-free shower, with an adjustable shower head, a height-adjustable shower chair and freedom of movement as there are no glass panels. The bathroom vanity allowed me to glide under comfortably with my scooter. There is an accessible toilet and for those who are tall and require extra height, there is a height-adjustable over-toilet chair.
It is a 4-minute walk to the beach.
The property is a 7-minute drive to Neptune Royal Life Saving Club which has the following equipment: Beach matting & Beach wheelchairs: and Waterwheels Equipment availability between 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Saturdays, September to May.
Palm Beach Surf Club is located right on the beachfront a few blocks away. With beach views, a beachfront bar & restaurant with live music.
We ventured to the local shops which were less than a 5-minute walk/scoot, and a footpath on the opposite side of the road takes you to the Gold Coast Hwy. There is Coles, a specialty butcher, takeaway restaurants, cafes, florists, hotels, barbers and the popular ‘The Collective’. We ate at Well Bread and Pastry (café/bakery) and were pleasantly surprised when they welcomed us in including our small dog.
Whilst parking isn’t sized as disabled parking, I found that reversing into the covered carport, we were able to disembark comfortably due to wider clearance on the right side closest to the entry gate. There is free on-street parking as well.
Beach wheelchair hire is available at Neptune Royal Life Saving Club which has beach matting & beach wheelchairs.
I would highly recommend this property to friends and family and with the light rail being extended this will only make sightseeing up and down the Gold Coast even more achievable.
