Castagna is the lower part of a 1000 year old fortified watchtower,
added to in around 1400 to form a casa padronale or manorhouse. The
property, which is made of old stone and ancient timbers, was recently
restored to its present fine condition and includes a modern kitchen
and bathroom, open fireplace and central heating. Two of the rooms have
beautiful stained glass windows and much of the furniture is new,
handmade by local cabinetmakers. The rooms have terracotta tiled floors
with cosy, colourful, oriental rugs. The kitchen has french windows
opening directly onto the large terrace. The house is situated on a
ridge of high ground and faces south. From the lush garden with fig and
oak trees, and from the sunshine bathed terrace are magnificent views
on either side across cultivated valleys to wooded hills beyond.

Castagna is located in the small ancient hamlet of Fonaco, on a leafy
ridge of high ground 3 miles to the southwest of the medieval hilltop
village of Monterchi, famous for its fresco of the Madonna del Parto by
Piero della Francesca, and situated in the heart of the birthplace of
the Renaissance. The countryside around is entirely rural with wooded
hills of chestnut and oak. In between are cultivated valleys with
olive, grape and fields of sunflower. Monterchi is just to the west of
the Upper Tiber Valley beyond which, and clearly visible from Fonaco,
is the mountainous range of the Apennines. Within 20 minutes are the
picturesque medieval and Renaissance small towns of Anghiari,
Sansepolcro and Citta di Castello; all brimming with life, good shops
and great restaurants. Just 35 minutes to the west is the city of
Arezzo with its large ancient town centre, Roman amphitheatre, bright
lights, glitzy shops and excellent main line rail communications.
